Europe is My Home Away From Home
Growing up in Europe, at first had its perks. But as I got older and my father lost his job; life became tough. It hasn’t improved much. Although, the situation is not so bad; like when my dad lost the job. Athens, in Europe, where I live is an enormous city and once it flourished with a lot of employment. Nowadays, there are none. The level of inflation is just not good. This gets even worse as we the poor can’t even afford simple healthcare. That is something that a lot of us need.
The kind of deplorable conditions that I have lived in rival that of a third world country poor guy. But am surviving that is the important thing after all, right? Hence, I keep telling myself that. Keep hoping that it is right and that things might get better. But nonetheless, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. As a matter of fact, I have a girlfriend who keeps telling me to get a job. She doesn’t know the kind of day that I have out here trying to look and keep one.
That reminds me, I once lost a job because I was a minute late
What happened was that; there was an elderly customer who was exiting the dinner that I worked in as I was walking in. I held the door for her, and that took about a minute, when I got to the front desk, the manager fired me for being late.
However, I would have sued for wrongful dismissal. Imagine if I can’t get the proper healthcare; where would I get a good lawyer for that whole process. To imagine all the money, it would take for the entire process to be complete. After a while, I thought about it. But thought better of it when my wife told me to get back up and look for other work. Poverty is real down here in Europe. Things get harder by the day; the fact that I have a two-year-old daughter that I got to think about. With that said, I have no time to relax at all, whatsoever.
Europe (Greece) is a beautiful country, no doubt
We are known for our rich and vast history in Europe.; that spans several thousands of years. Who knows, I might even be a descendant of Zeus if he was broke and looking for a job; and never finding one that is well paying. With all the history that we have; you would think that things would always be better for us. Sadly, although, that is not the case.
What I mean is, we are the inventors of The Olympic Games. The biggest sporting event on the planet. Hence still, we are broke. Our economy is crumbling. The Good thing is that it is taking me down with it as well. It is a tough world out here in Athens. Nevertheless, I am trying to make ends meet to no avail.
The past in Europe
When I was a kid, I always believed in the mantra that the sky is the limit for us Greek people. Well, I grew up and realized that the heavens are far away. Best to just leave it alone. My best friend who is also looking for a job with me is just as enthusiastic as I am about things here. He has two kids, and his mom depends on him too. As she can’t take care of herself. He is always complaining. Sometimes he makes a lot of sense. But other times; I just look at him and wonder what it is that we have in common.
He once got fired from a lucrative job in one of the big hotels here in Athens, Europe. He talked back to his supervisor. Then he got fired immediately without even his week’s pay. If there is one thing that this poverty in Europe has taught me; is that humility is your suit of armor. If you are humble, and you can take anything that is thrown your way; then you can make any job last for years on end.
So, why my friend talked back to his supervisor knowing very well how much he was paid; as well as how many people would jump into that job; the moment he walked out. At least he would have told me earlier that day I walk into his workplace with him. So I could replace him as he was getting fired.
